Ruslana Korshunova: 1987-2008
I apologise as this is not a great way to start the week, but there was sad news today, as it was reported that model and rising star of the fashion world Ruslana Korshunova died, after falling from her 9th floor, New York apartment.
There are few details at present, but officials say that the death of the 20 year old , four days short of her 21st birthday, is either a tragic accident, or of course, suicide - despite her friends avid protestations over the latter.
Spotted by chance, Kazakhstan born, Ruslana was noticed by a model scout, in an article about a bar in Ruslana’s home town, the model scout did not rest till he had found the girl, who would later be described as a ‘fairytail’ thanks to her thigh length hair (that she refused to cut until 15) and striking feline features. Within months of being discovered, Ruslana was catapulted into the limelight, gracing the covers of Russian Vogue and French Elle as well as fronting campaigns for Ghost, Moschino, Paul Smith and Vera Wang. This was surely every little girls dream?
Maybe not. Amid rumours of suicide, reports suggest she had recently written online about feeling ‘trapped and unable to fly’ - crys for help? We shall never truly know.
However, for now we do know that the fashion world has lost another irreplaceable, beautiful talent and a Vogue tipped Supermodel of the future. A sad day indeed.
