Kids love designers love kids
In support of our exciting new collection of kids designer wear on the site, I thought it would be interesting to document some of the famous ad campaigns by top designers involving children. Little Prima Donna’s they might be, but who are we to argue with the fashion darrrrlings.
Putting children in fashion shoots, is all well and good, it’s a good way of drawing attention to your brand with the ‘oh look an adult, oh no its a kid acting like an adult how kooky’ response.
Look at the attention Marc Jacobs got from his S/S 07 campaign which starred a young actress by the name of Dakota Fanning (only 12 at the time pictured in both normal shot and the Marc Jacobs Ad itself). These images went down well and were a success for the brand.
A similar fashion house, Diesel are very good at using children in their ad campaigns for a quirky, unexpected ad - take a look at last seasons lost boys inspired theme.
However there is a darker side to child modeling and to what extent adults should be able to use children to their benefit? For example look at the furor that surrounded the suggestive imagery of a 15 year old Miley Cyrus, which appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair a few months back - was that cover really her choice, was it really for her benefit? Or was it someone exploiting a child for the buck, knowing controversy pays? Tricky…

The Miley shot makes me uneasy - but she is 15 and we shouldn’t just assume that they cannot speak for themselves at the age… however it is a fine line and advertisers need to know when and where they can cross it, if at all!
