In these harsh economic times, are you cheering yourself up with a dash of lippy? You’re not alone. According to the FT, the Lipstick Index is on the up, with sales increasing 40 per cent recently - it’s a phenomenon that Estee Lauder chairman Leonard Lauder dubbed the Leading Lipstick Indicator after sales of lipstick soared in the wake of 9/11. There’s competition, however, from the humble pair of tights: as the Wall Street Journal asks, “Could hosiery be the new lipstick?” Sales of hosiery are on the up too, it appears; and what better way to update your wardrobe on the cheap than with a pair of coloured tights?

Having tried both in the past few weeks, I can report that a new lipstick definitely wins the day when it comes to compliments of the “you look well” variety; but what works for you? Lace tights? Great mascara? Do tell.
