“All’s Fair in Love and Fashion”

Kim Cattrall HarrodsThis will definitely be the mantra of the fashion-obsessed for the next month, as legendary department store Harrods opened its doors to the renowned Summer Sale yesterday morning.

In true tradition of female celebrities starting the sale, Miss Kim Cattrall of Sex and The City arrived just before 9:00 in a fabulous cream outfit and Givenchy shoes that would make even Samantha drool. After pulling up in a horse-drawn carriage, the British-born actress (that’s right! She lived in Liverpool for the first three years of her life) was greeted by owner Mohamed Al Fayed in front of hundreds of eager shoppers.

While perusing the incredible mark-downs on YSL and Gucci handbags she went on to say, “from the clothes, shoes [and] handbags…I’ve been a faithful Harrods shopper since I got my first credit card.” Ahh the life of the rich and famous!

But even for the rest of us, who only dream of maxing out the card in those hallowed halls, can find bargains galore from now until July 26th, when the sale ends. Rumours have been circulating that Chloe shoes and Vivienne Westwood dresses have dropped to prices half their original value! The sale also takes place online, just in case you can’t drag yourself out.

(Speaking of online…don’t forget about koodos’ clearance sale going on right now as well. Hurry up and have a look! The cutest things always go first!)

So, with even more discounts and special events for cardholders, Harrods (and koodos) is surely THE place to be for the rest of the summer – see you there!

Fashioning Buildings and Constructing Garments

skin-and-bones1.jpgFor all you true fashionistas out there that genuinely appreciate the artistic vibes in couture and installation art: you MUST go see the Skin+Bones exhibition taking place at Somerset House this summer.

The renowned exhibit takes a serious look at the crazy connections between fashion and architecture since the 1980s, and – get this – completely sold out for its entire run in both Los Angeles and Tokyo.

Parallels between the two mediums are made in five different categories (patterns, geometry, construction, deconstruction and folding), and bring home the message that both fashion and architecture serve to “protect and shelter the body.” Over 200 works are scattered throughout the dark room, including breathtaking iconic garments, 3D architectural models, and actual film footage. My personal favourite was a video showing a Viktor and Rolfe show in which they dressed a model in no less than 9 beautiful layers of clothing. True, by the end she was hardly recognizable, but it was an impressive act!

While the exhibit really will be most appreciated by the very artsy indeed, one only has to love gorgeous, innovative clothes and mind-blowing building models to enjoy the hour. After all, with participating designers including wild child Alexander McQueen, fashion-technology genius Hussein Chalayan (remote control dress, anyone?), and ahead-of-the-fashion-curve Yoshi Yamamoto, you’re definitely in for a treat!

Peaches and cream for Agent Provocateur

Monday, June 16th, 2008

peaches-geldof-ppq.jpgPeaches Geldof is reported to be the new face of Agent Provocateur.

With a hunger for fame that has lead her down some questionable paths, snort, this could be the lucky break Peaches has been waiting for. Nothing like being paralleled with Kate Moss to give your career a bit of a boost.

Although recently most commonly recalled as half of DJing duo ‘Trash Pussies’, Peaches has been heralded by some as a fashion icon and famously called Trinny and Susannah (from the self-named show) ‘upper-class bitches with no fashion sense’. There was also much hoo-ha from the last London Fashion Week as Peaches modelled upcoming London label PPQ’s latest collection.

I personally miss what everyone else seems to be going on about as I find her look rather average, dare I say dull? I believe the reason for her latest deal with the lingerie label is more owing to the icon behind the face and body on show - of a young, creative girl from a well-to-do family in her desperate search for fame. That and the fact that her full name is actually Peaches Honeyblossom Michelle Charlotte Angel Vanessa Geldof.

Prints charming

flower-dress3.jpgLike ordering at a restaurant with a bunch of your friends, we all want to know what everyone else is doing. In fashion, it gives us ideas on how to form our own look for the upcoming season, and gives a little sneak preview on what works - and what doesn’t.

The big news this spring/summer is floral prints - bold or subtle, bright or subdued, it’s all about working the prints. From the Fashion Week stretch last year there were some very obvious trends to lead with this Spring/Summer - feminine, nipped in waists, cute patterned dresses and colour colour colour. We’ve got some stunners on the site - take a peak here - serve piping hot with a stack of big bangles and perhaps some glad sandals.flower-dress2.jpg

Extra tip - to emphasise your Spring/Summery look (and help boost a barely non-existant tan) try using either white or yellow nail polish. A little sceptical at first, I snapped up a little pot of white Barry M polish for just £4 and have since fallen in love with it.
