Gucci - Fashion from an Italian-Franco master-class

Gucci is by far one of the biggest and most iconic fashion houses on earth. From its humble beginnings in Florence in 1906, Gucci as a name and brand is considered as one of the most prestigious and stylish around - with Gucci handbags and shoes becoming style icons all on their own.

Gucci has had a turbulent existence, mainly due to its fiery bloodline as opposed to its ability to sell, for that has never been an issue for this dynamic fashion house. In the 60's and 70's Gucci was the epitome of chic, dressing the likes of Jackie Onassis, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. The 80's and early 90's saw Gucci loose out to more dramatic, newer brands however with the acquisition of Tom Ford as creative director in 1994, Gucci was back on top.

Gucci is known for its exquisite designs, its sensual look and its luxuriously rebellious attitude. Tom Ford was not afraid to make people look sexy and valued sex appeal quite highly in his Gucci designs for the brand, making it a favourite for the rich and glamorous.

A new direction for Gucci

Recent autumn 2007 / winter 2008 shows have displayed a new look for Gucci since the departure of Tom Ford in 2005, with new creative director Frida Giannini at the helm. The Spring / Summer 08 collection reiterated this exciting new tone in the Italian fashion house. This season looks set to be a very successful one for Gucci and its bold, eye-catching collection. There was a beautiful array of short, originally cut prom dresses, adorned with huge graphic floral prints – floral being a big trend this spring. Gucci keeps us on our toes this season with an eclectic mix of tartan, checks and pvc snakeskin – sometimes at the same time. The colours this season are whites, mustard yellows and blacks – all beautiful and of course all very stylish.

Giannini is doing great things for Gucci and we must allow her to flourish and develop as the creative director of Gucci without too much comparison to the great Tom Ford, hard as it may be.
