Paul Smith - An English fashion legend

Born and raised in Nottingham, Paul Smith has come a long long way since his first job in a textile factory in the Midlands.

Paul Smith's designs are quintessentially English. Blazers and stripes dominate his fashion collections and he is known for his love of tomboy / women's fashion. He has a ironic whimsical flare that is encapsulated within his designs and his recent London fashion show for Spring / Summer 08 was no different.

Paul Smith likes to shake things up a bit, and on the catwalk he shows this the best with women dressed in shorts and blazers, some even with specially designed female bow ties however they all looked stunning and feminine, cleverly without a hint of androgyny – His tongue in cheek style was epitomised by his models, including Lily Cole, wearing huge, round ‘Harry Potter-esque’ glasses – a nod towards the twee english caricature perhaps?

However twee is not the correct word to describe Paul Smith’s S/S 08 collection as despite his sense of humour and his love of challenging gender fashion ideals. Paul Smith also creates beautifully sharp cuts and tailoring, seamlessly bringing us into the spring with pastel hues, exotic silks and of course, the trademark stripes that are synonymous with Paul Smith designs.
