Tommy Hilfiger is both man and brand. Rarely does one man build such a successful eponymous company within such a short amount of time, but one thing you cannot deny is that Tommy Hilfiger is a true American success story, inside and out.

Tommy Hilfiger was born in the New York suburb of Elmira. He was a young, determined individual who would regularly take trips to the Big Apple to source denim that he could customise and sell on at a profit.

Tommy Hilfiger’s love of denim coupled with the American swinging ethos of 1969 saw Tommy Hilfiger set up his own retail business when he was only 18. Although extremely popular with the local youth of Elmira as a place to ‘hang out’, it appeared no one was buying his designs and Tommy Hilfiger’s shop, namely ‘The People’s Place’, went bankrupt when Tommy was only 25.

Not to be beaten, Tommy Hilfiger went to New York to further his designer fashion dreams and despite being penniless and offered assistant designer positions under both Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein, Hilfiger refused them all. Tommy Hilfiger stated greater aspirations for himself as reasons for turning such opportunities down.

Tommy Hilfiger - A very fashionable lifestyle

Tommy Hilfiger went on to establish his world famous all American brand, refusing to simply specialise in designer fashion, his empire expanded to included fashion accessories, such as designer handbags and home goods in an attempt to forge a general fashion lifestyle - to “celebrate individuality”.

In recent years the brand has expanded further to include the Tommy ‘Hilfiger Sessions’, a set of music gigs honouring young up and coming musicians, a special Tommy ‘Hilfiger denim’ range and most recently a collaboration with National Geographic to emphasise global issues.
